There are high rates of unemployment in Birahimpur. A few local men have jobs in Sylhet city, approximately 1 hour away but many local men are working abroad. While this provides much-needed income, it means that parents in the village are left without their sons, wives are left without their husbands and children without their fathers.
A medium-to-long term goal of Seeds of Growth is to provide practical skills-based training to local men and women in gardening, growing vegetables, sewing and raising chickens. Developing these practical skills will promote self-sufficiency in the village.
Seeds of Growth will also aim to provide tools and training to encourage and support the development of local small enterprise initiatives.
