A survey was undertaken in December 2016. It took four people eight hours to complete. Families from 131 houses in Birahimpur took part. The survey identified a number of areas of concern:

• Very few of the children below school age are in playgroups
• A number of the children in the village have disabilities including deafness, mental and physical disabilities but the village has no facilities for these children
• There are a number of adults who are disabled through illness or age, but there are very few wheelchairs to assist them in getting out of their houses. In the few cases where there are wheelchairs, the parent or partner of the person is not strong enough to push the chair, particularly on rough ground
• Long term illnesses are compounded by lack of finance, poor sanitation, inadequate diet, general lack of care and difficult existence
• There are a number of fathers absent from homes for work; while this creates an income, it also deprives families of fathers, wives of husbands and parents of sons
• There was one child,  a 15 year old girl, who was kept out of school to go to work as her father was unable to work
• One woman participant expressed a longing to learn to read
• Many people in the village are homeless, renting sheds or other inappropriate accommodation. The exact number of homeless people is difficult to determine, people are sometimes embarrassed to say
• 121 households are without clean water and 80  families are without any form sanitation
• 57 have roofs that leak
• At the time of the survey, 70 children were without school entrance fees
• There is no appropriate place for schoolchildren to study
• Other miscellaneous needs including teacher training and school exchanges
